DAVID LIVINGSTONE (1813-1873)
Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, London: John Murray, 1857. 8° (221 x 148mm.). Folding wood-engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait of the author and 22 wood-engraved plates, illustrations, some full-page. (Portrait spotted, a few gatherings starting to detach, a few marginal spots.) Original publisher's cloth, flat spine lettered in gilt (head and tail of spine slightly chipped, small part of cloth split at foot of upper joint, corners bumped).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. In the copy listed in Abbey, plates nos. 1, 8 and 14 are tinted lithographs. In our copy, all plates apart from plate no. 2, which is steel-engraved, are wood-engraved. "In the British Museum copy Numbers 1 and 8 are wood-engravings ... It seems likely ... that this British Museum copy is a first issue of the book, since one would expect improved plates to be later". Abbey Travel 347.

Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), and thence by descent to the present owner
