Lot Essay

These few dim images represent some of the earliest surviving photographs of the Congo, taken over the first period when Stanley was working in the lower reaches of the Congo for Leopold II in 1879-82. A selection of these images were engraved to illustrate Stanley's The Congo and the Founding of its Free State, London, 1885.
