Robert Melville Grindlay (1786-1877)
Scenery, Costumes and Architecture, chiefly on the Western Side of India, London: R. Ackermann, 1826. Parts I-IV only (of 6 parts), 2° (395 x 302mm.). Engraved title with handcoloured vignette and 24 handcoloured etched and engraved plates, coloured by J. B. Hogarth, engraved by R. Reeve, T. Fielding and others after Grindlay, W. Westall, D. Roberts and others. (Title repaired with fraying edges, a few light scattered spots and thumbmarks, offsetting onto paper guards). Contemporary boards (re-backed and re-cornered, rubbed).

A FINE COPY of the first four of the original six parts of 36 plates. Ackermann published the first two parts, the remainder taken over by Smith Elder. "Next to Daniell, the most attractive colour plate book on India. One of the few books in which the name of the colourist is mentioned" (Tooley 239); Abbey Travel 442; Colas 1333.
