JAMES WATHEN (1751-1812)
Journal of a Voyage in 1811 and 1812, to Madras and China; returning by the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena, London: J. Nichols, Bentley, Black and Parry, 1814. 4° (270 x 214mm.). 24 handcoloured aquatint plates by Clark after Wahten. (Offsetting from plates, occasional spotting.) Modern half calf preserving old marbled boards (boards rubbed). Provenance: King's Inns Library, Dublin (stamp on verso of title and final leaf of text).

FIRST EDITION. Wathen's 'narrative is lively, and his account of eastern life is minute and interesting' (DNB). He was a fast but accurate draughtsman completing up to 20 drawings a day (this earned him the sobriquet 'Jemmy Sketch'). The views in this work comprise: 7 of India; 6 of Malaya or Indonesia; 9 of China and 2 of St. Helena. Abbey Travel 517.
