THE VOYAGE OF THE HECLA, 1827
The Arctic Medal 1818-1855 awarded to Able Seaman John Young, silver, engraved 'JOHN YOUNG' on the rim

Parry took the Hecla to the north coast of Spitzbergen in 1827, setting out with twenty seven men and two boats on 21 June to walk to the North Pole. They travelled almost 300 miles in five weeks and, in spite of drifting south, achived a record at that time for their furthest point north. The party returned to the ship on 21 August 1827 and arrived back in England in October.
