SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922)
'Daisy' Margaret Mary Julia ASHFORD (1881-1972). The Young Visiters or, Mr. Salteenas plan ... with a preface by J.M. Barrie. London: the Complete Press for Chatto & Windus, August 1919. Small 8° (168 x 122mm.). Portrait frontispiece, one plate. (Some light marginal spotting.) Original cloth-backed marbled boards (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Henrietta Shackleton (presentation inscription, in pencil, from Ernest Shackleton 'To Mother With Ernest's love Sept 28th 1919'); by descent to Lady Shackleton (Sir Ernest's daughter-in-law, pencilled signature 'A.V. Shackleton').
AN INTERESTING ASSOCIATION COPY OF THIS CHARMING BESTSELLER, given by Shackleton to his mother on her birthday. During this period Shackleton was in England, lecturing and correcting the proofs of South, his account of the Endurance expedition. The unintentional humour of the work would undoubtedly have appealed to Shackleton, whilst some of Mr. Salteena's remarks may well have struck a chord: 'I am parshial (sic.) to ladies if they are nice I suppose that is my nature' (The Young Visiters p.21).
