Lot Essay
This design has traditionally been attributed to Daniel Marot (d. 1752), who is recorded having been paid for drawings related to tapestries supplied to William III. It is however probable that it was Johannes Christoph Lotijn (d. 1700), a flower painter, who acted as agent to William III in commissioning tapestries, who prepared the actual cartoons for the eight weavings of the subject in Brussels. Examples of the originals are in the Dutch Royal Collection at the palace of Het Loo, the English Royal Collection at Windsor Castle the collection of the prince of Hesse at Schloss Friedrichshof, Kronberg and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham, England.
