Born Marie-Louise Damien, Damia captivated audiences with her unique interpretations of cabaret and chanson music in Paris in the 1930s. Her uniform style of dress, a black V-neck shift, and dramatic staging and choreaography became hallmarks of her performances, influencing Edith Piaf and other cabaret performers of the day.
