Regard Jewels
Sentimentality and symbolism reigned supreme during the Romantic period of the Victorian era, from 1837-1860. The love of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who married in 1840, served as the impetus for romance and sentimentality. Nearly every motif and gemstone used in jewelry conveyed a specific meaning. Regard jewelry, also known as acrostic or message jewelry, featured gemstones in combinations that spelled sentimental words. For example, a ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, ruby and diamond would be set in a series to spell the word 'Regard'. Regard jewels were often lockets that held within them a lock of hair or portrait of a loved one. Other hidden meanings were conveyed through the use of symbols: the depiction of a honeybee and crescent moon, for example, might have commemorated a couple's honeymoon.
