Carbuncle Garnets Garnets, traditionally called "carbuncles", became highly prized and widely used in mid 19th century jewelry. This unfortunate name from the Latin, originally meaning "small glowing ember" came to mean a painful red sore and later, the deepest purple red garnets cut en cabochon. Carbuncles, typically paired with pearls, turquoise or diamonds were often backed with gold to add light to the dark stone. Flat smaller-cut garnets from Bohemia and later from Ceylon and Brazil were set in various styles thoughout the 1800s. In the 1820s these flat, closed back stones, arranged in star or flower-shaped clusters were referred to as "Bohemian-style" jewelry.
