Hair Jewelry
Hair jewelry attained its greatest popularity in the mid-19th century. Its prominence paralleled that of mourning dress, made mandatory in Queen Victoria's court following the death of Prince Albert in 1861, and henceforth widely adopted throughout England, the Continent and America. Hair jewels functioned both as a momento of the deceased and as a reminder that death is ever-present. On occasion, hair jewels also served a sentimental role for lovers.
