A GILTWOOD UPHOLSTERED TRIPLE BACK SETTEE
Spanish, in the William and Mary style, late 19th century
With foliate and cabochon framing throughout, between gadrooned finials and shaped sides with scrolls and padded outswept scroll arm supports with cushion seat and three cushions upholstered in velvet and silk damask, the shaped seatrail on square tapered legs joined by curved stretchers

Lot Essay

The design of the settee is based on a sofa formerly at Hornby Castle, now at the Temple Newsam, Yorkshire, illustrated in The Dictionary of English Furniture, Revised Edition by Ralph Edwards, Vol III, Fig 9, p.75.
Similarities to the State Salon Suite from Bedingbrough, Yorkshire, sold Curtis & Henson house sale, 12th June 1958, part lots 659-663.

A similar suite, the property of the Ditchley Foundation was sold in these rooms, lot 106, 20 March 1996.
