Lot Essay

Joseph Dufour (1757-1827) founded a wallpaper manufacturing company in 1804 in Mâcon, initially in partnership with his brother Pierre, under the name Dufour Frères. The first panoramic wallpaper was launched, designed by Jean-Gabriel Charvet, entitled 'Savages of the Pacific'. Dufour took on his son-in-law Amable Leroy (1788-1880) in 1823, changing the name once more. The buisness was finally taken over by the Desfossé company in 1865.
The 'Les Rives du Bosphore' was relatively expensive to produce, using over seventy colours and reflects the contemporary romanticised vision of the Oriental world in the choice of subject.
There is a comparable example at Schloss Herrnsheim, near Worms, Germany. Two more examples were sold at Sotheby's, London, 9 December 1988, lot 204.
