Provenance
R. Olaf Hambro, Esq., Linton Park, Kent, sold by Order of the Executor, Christie's house sale, 2 October 1961, lot 202.
The pier-glass cresting, with arabesque flame-guarding griffins, derives from a pattern invented by Robert Adam (d.1792) in 1772 for the Earl of Bute at Luton Park, Bedfordshire and illustrated in the The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam, vol.III, pl.XI, 1822. This pier-glass formed part of the collection of antique furniture assembled by Mr Olaf Hambro (d.1960) first at Kidbrook Park, Sussex and later, from 1938, at Linton Park, Kent.
