Lot Essay

Robert Prenzel (1866-1941) emigrated to Australia from Prussia in 1888. By 1900 he established his own business as a furniture manufacturer in South Melbourne, mainly operating from South Yarra from 1910 to 1930.
Prenzel created an uniquely Australian translation of the Art Nouveau and American Arts and Crafts styles. This lot illustrates a similar use of the native flora and fauna carved in a characterful manner.
