These side tables are designed in the elegant George III Etruscan/Roman fashion promoted in the 1770s by the publication of Robert and James Adam's Works in Architecture, 1773. The frieze design appears on a pair of George III examples with painted tops from Viscount Leverhulme's collection, one of which is illustrated in P. Macquoid, The Age of Satinwood, New York, 1908, fig.213. The pair was sold in these Rooms, 14 October 1989, lot 137.
The revived interest in Adam neoclassical style furniture was promoted during the latter part of the 19th century by firms such as Waring & Gillow who reproduced replicas of their own 18th century designs. The firm which was formed through the amalgamation of S.J.Waring & Sons, the retailers, with the eighteenth century firm, Gillows of Lancaster, may have been responsible for the manufacture of this table.
