Lot Essay

The maker's mark that is struck on the present tobacco pot is found on objects which date from 1746 until 1768. It may be identified as a tower upon which a small flag is planted. In other instances however it looks more like a tree-trunk. This makes the attribution of the mark complicated. The most obvious candidate is Bartholomeus van der Toorn (tower). He is listed in 1745 and in a letter dated 1768 his mark is described as a tower. Other candidates are Aldert Stam (trunk), listed in 1745 but not mentioned in 1768; and Dirk Meerhout, whose mark is described as a tree in 1768. (see: I.N. Schadee, Zilverschatten, drie eeuwen Rotterdams zilver, Rotterdam, 1991, pp. 11-12, 227.)
