This set of six walnut dining chairs is comparable to a set made for the Fundatie van Renswoude by Johannes Hageman. Hageman delivered 24 walnut chairs to the Fundatie in 1764. Little is known about Hageman other than that he was a German chairmaker from Mingelen, and that he is first mentioned in the ledgers of the city Utrecht in 1748. The present lot shares the same feel with the Renswoude chairs. Both are slightly provincial in execution, quite heavy set and carved in low relief. It is quite likely that these six chairs were also made in Utrecht or in another provincial town in the Netherlands.
The present lot has shaped H-stretchers, unusual for this type of "French" chairs and usually found on chairs made in the English taste of the first half of the 18th Century.

One chair has been dated on the webbing underneath the seat 1767, we can be quite certain that they were made in the same year. Unfortunately due to a later webbing partially covering the originals we were unable to decifer the rest of the inscription.
