Lot Essay

A similar tile with single larger figure was sold in these Rooms 15 October 2002, lot 212. A number of other tiles from the same group recently appeared at auction in Paris from the collection of Hayaux du Tilly (Boisgirard, C and Kévorkian, A: Arts d'Orient, Paris, 14 February 2002, lots 265-269). They shared with our tile the colour scheme, the four domical depressions on the underside, and a similar drawing style. The pink seen in a number of those tiles helps confirm a dating from the end of the Safavid period.
