Lot Essay

The head of the lady is turned in the opposite direction but is otherwise directly taken from Woman with a Veil mentioned in the note to the previous lot (Soudavar, op.cit. under lot 131, no.109, p.271). She has the same sweet expression, head ornament and veil pushed to one side.
The pose of the woman can be seen in another drawing of the 1590s of a Youth Holding a Cup (Canby, S.: The Rebellious Reformer, The drawings and paintings of Reza-yi 'Abbasi of Isfahan, London, 1996, no.20, p.50)
The later inscription refers to the string and, roughly translated, says "don't start to pull the string as it is very long", in other words, "don't start what you will not be able to finish".
