A KHORASSAN CARPET
North East Persia, late 18th or early 19th century
The midnight-blue field with light blue abrash at one end with an overall design of cypress trees alternating with feathery palmettes issuing floral sprays, in a sandy yellow palmette, flowerhead and angular vine border between golden yellow floral meander stripes, slight overall wear, selvages replaced

Lot Essay

In its previous publication this carpet was described as Indian, mid-19th century. While the colours are not typical of Khorassan carpets, the wool, the weave and the design are all fully consistent with such an attribution. Were it not for the colours, all the other features would support an eighteenth century dating.
