Karabagh region, South Caucasus, Late 17th century
The tomato-red field of each with an overall lattice of bold lemon-yellow, ivory and pale green stylised palmettes around stylised dragon motifs and polychrome flowerheads, a part ivory angular palmette and hooked vine border on one side, areas of wear and partial loss, scattered patch restorations, backed separately

拍品專文

The drawing, the border motif, the spacing and particularly the colours of these two fragments indicate a relatively early date within the developments of dragon carpets. The same features can be seen, on a complete dragon carpet in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection, amongst others (Ellis, Charles Grant: Early Caucasian Rugs, Washington D.C., pl.12, pp.54-5).
