Lot Essay

A similar example which had four niches per row rather than the two seen here was exhibited in Switzerland (Alte Teppiche aus dem Orient. exhibition catalogue, Gewerbemuseum Basel, 1980, pp.46-7). Both examples have the unusual feature of prayer niches which face each other across the centre, indicating that the design had become a decorative motif by the time these were woven rather than being intended for prayer.
