The service was ordered on the occasion of the wedding of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, second son of Tsar Nicholas I.
The service was one of the first produced in the russian-byzantin style designed by the architect Solnstev and executed at the Imperial Porcelain Factory between 1848-1852.
The decoration includes cartouches incorporating the interlaced monogram of Grand Duke Konstantin (Cyrillic initials VKKN) and the russian imperial eagle.
The helmet finial of the cover depicts the one worn by Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich made in Iran in the XVI Century and now exhibited at the Kremlin. The same helmet is reproduced in Solntsev's book published in 1853 entitled "Treasures of the Russian Government".
