Lot Essay

Nikolai Egorovich Sverchkov (1817-1898) was a well-known painter, whose works included mainly equestrian themes. Born in St. Petersburg, he visited France, Germany and Holland. He exhibited in Paris from 1859 and one of his works was bought by the French Emperor Napoleon III in 1863. He was a member of the Academy in St. Petersburg from 1852. He died at Tsarskoe Selo.

The album represents horses from well-known Russian stud farms such as the ones owned by Count Zubov, Count A.F. Orlov, Count K.K. Toll', Chesmenskii zavod, Count Rastopchin, etc.
