SHISHKIN, I., Etchings by I.I. Shishkin 1885-1886
4o, 26 etchings mounted on card (title and 25 views), contents loose as issued, in original gilt decorated cloth portfolio
Known essentially as a painter, Shishkin was a skillful graphic artist. He first tried etching in 1853. Etching attracted the artist by the relative rapidity of the process and the pictorial possibilities of the technique. He worked for the most part with a needle, using soft ground and aquatint finish.
In 1886, Shishkin published his third collection of etchings under The Etchings by I.I. Shishkin by A.E. Palchikov. All the etchings are listed in D.A. Rovinskii, Dictionary of Russian Engravers VXI to XIX Centuries, Volume II, St. Petersburg, 1895, pgs. 1193-1196
