A FINE PAIR OF GEORGE II IRISH SILVER SOUP TUREENS*
Mark of John Laughlin, Sr., Dublin, circa 1760
Shaped oval on four knurled feet, the body with applied foliage swags with reed and tie border, the raised cover with conforming decoration and pomegranate finial, with fitted liner, the body engraved with a Viscount's armorials, the cover engraved with a crest, each marked on base and cover bezel, the liners mark of John Smith, Dublin, 1844, maker's mark JS, the bases engraved No. 1 116.4 and No. 2 116.6

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Wingfield impaling those of Stratford, as borne by Richard, 3rd Viscount Powerscourt (1730-1788) of Powerscourt, Co. Wicklow. He married in 1760 Amelia, daughter of the 1st Earl of Aldborough, and succeeded his brother in 1764.

A similar pair of sauce tureens by the same maker were sold at Christie's, London, 27 March 1957, lot 151. An Irish epergne with Laughlin;s maker's mark was made for the 3rd Viscount Powerscourt and sold at Christie's, New York, 20 April 2000, lot 247.
