Shaped solid oval, on four shell feet headed by grapes and wheat sheaves, the border applied with shells and scrolls, the overhead fixed handle with scrolls, the center engraved with a coat-of-arms, the handle engraved with a crest, marked on rim, the base engraved with scratchweight 67=10

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Hartstronge impaling those of Fitz-Patrick.

The only other known solid Irish cake basket is marked John Hamilton, Dublin, 1736 and was sold Christie's, London, 11 May 1994, lot 220. These rare baskets relate to a solid Irish dish ring by David Bomes in that the form is usually pierced. See Christie's, New York, 23 October 2000, lot 231.
