A young lady called Giuseppina Grassini (1775-1850), the celebrated opera singer, full face in white dress with high lace collar, red cashmere stole with blue tasselled border draped around her shoulders and pinned with a gold cameo brooch at her right shoulder, white bonnet in her dark curling hair; pillar and steps background with high wall beyond and a building with cupola beyond

The backing paper is inscribed 'Mme Grassini 1ere cantatrice 1810'.

Grassini was famed for her incredible voice and dramatic ability. She became one of Napoleon Bonaparte's mistresses
