Bodenehr, title printed in red and black. 14 engraved plates, including 3 folding plates and 2 engraved plates of Japanese symbols (one folding plate laid down, with loss to image, light browing and marginal staining). Modern boards. Provenance: purchased from Rousseau Girard, 1963.
FIRST EDITION of Meister's description of his voyage to Dakarta and Japan as a soldier of the Dutch East India Company. It includes numerous descriptions of plants, including Tea and presumably the first western description of Camellia (Arbor Zuwacky, p. 150). Meister's entire journey lasted from 1677 to 1688. He accompanied Andreas Cleyer on two trips to Nagasaki in 1682-83 and 1685-86. The above is also an interesting early German study of the Japanese language. VERY RARE. Pritzel 6070; not in Nissen, Stafleu and Cowan or Hunt.
