Lot Essay

This is an exceptional print of Koppitz's most iconic work and one of the most recognized images of European 20th century photography. Made in the 1920s during the Viennese Secessionist movement, Bewegungsstudie (Study of Movement) captures four professional dancers posed by Koppitz into a sensual composition of form and line. The influences of his Viennese contemporaries are clear, particularly Gustav Klimt. The flowing lines of the drapery create a classically pyramidal form dramatically setting off the sinuous lines of the nude floating against the darkness of the background.
