Lot Essay

The present two coolers are from an as yet unidentified service of which other pieces are in the collection of Marjorie Merriweather Post at Hillwood Museum and Gardens, Washington, D.C. Cf. Liana Paredes Arend, Sèvres Porcelain at Hillwood, Washington, D.C., 1998, p. 74, fig. 51, illustrated on the opposite page.

Jean-Jacques Pierre, le jeune is recorded at Sèvres as a painter specializing in flowers and friezes and as a gilder 1763-1800. His older brother and his wife, daughter of the noted bird painter Armand l'aîné, were also employed at the factory as flower painters.
