A SEVRES WASHED PALE BLUE BISCUIT PORTRAIT MEDALLION OF LOUIS XVI
Circa 1785, incised in script along the truncation Sèvres and on the reverse B for Brachard
Truncated at the neck, his head to left, his hair curled at the ears and secured in a queue with a ribbon at the nape of his neck
4 1/8in. (10.4cm.) diam., including original gilt-copper frame chased with a narrow band of anthemia

Lot Essay

Jean-Charles-Nicolas Brachard aîné (1766-1846) is recorded as a sculptor at Sèvres 1782 - 1800 with a brief sojourn as a painter 1791-1795. Several portrait medallions in the Wedgwood style similar to the present example are in the collection of the British Museum. A Brachard portrait of the Duke of Wellington from The Pompey Collection was sold in these rooms 23 May 2002, lot 101.
