Lot Essay

The delicate floral decoration on a pale blue ground of this charming settee is typical of the refined 'lacca' furniture produced in the
mid-18th century in Venice, which, through its long-established trade links with the Orient, was one of the first centres for lacquer wares in Europe. A settee of related overall form and with similar floral decoration on a blue ground, but without the unusually rich carved ornament of the example offered here, is illustrated in S. Levy, Lacche Veneziane Settecentesche, Milan, 1967, vol. I, fig. 14.
