A LOUIS XIV ORMOLU-MOUNTED WALNUT, FRUITWOOD, ASH, MARQUETRY AND IVORY-INLAID COMMODE**

The rounded rectangular top with two large cartouches with flowering vases, flowers and butterfly, framed by floral and foliate borders and a molded band, above three long double-bowed drawers with three panels each, two with floral marquetry and a grotesque mask, above the conformingly decorated apron, flanked by rounded angles and the sides with panels with vases of flowers, and on bracket feet, the mounts probably 18th century and regilt

Lot Essay

With its solid rectangular form and unusual use of ash and sophisticated floral marquetry, this commode is close to the work of the celebrated Hache dynasty of ébénistes from Grenoble. A large bureau mazarin attributed to Thomas Hache (1664-1747) and made at around the same time as the present lot is decorated with highly similar marquetry of densely scrolled flowers and birds (see R. Fonvielle, La Dynastie des Hache, Grenoble, 1974, p.13).
