Lot Essay

With its characteristically hipped and molded frieze and trellis parquetry to the drawers, this bold Roman commode relates to a small group that includes one sold anonymously in these Rooms, 18 September 1993, lot 154 ($92,700) and one illustrated in M. Agnelli, ed., Mobili Italiani del Settecento, Milan, 1990, p. 80. A further commode of nearly identical dimensions and square trellis rather than the more typical diamond-shaped trellis, albeit with brèche d'Alep marble top was sold anonymously, Christie's Monaco, 19 June 1988, lot 87.
