A Private Collection of Egyptian and Graeco-Roman antiquities (lots 118-197) The collection was acquired by the present owner in London in the early 1970s. There is no reason to doubt that the Egyptian part of this collection was formed by George Anastase Michaelides (1900-1973) and legally exported from Egypt in the 1940s (personal communication from Peter Clayton). Michaelides was born in Cairo and, in the 1930s-1940s, acquired one of the finest collections of papyri, ostraca, bronzes, seals and scarabs, most of which are now in important museums. The collection, exported under licence, bore inventory numbers, some of which still survive on these objects, but to date no inventory has come to light. THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN

Comprising two Egyptian bronze rings, four ring bezels and seven other bronze rings or bezels: one cut with nefer (good luck) sign between maat-feathers and uraei, Third Intermediate Period (1069-702 B.C.); another, falcon sun-god confronting seated deity, over lion and house sign, Late Period (664-332 B.C.); bezel, itn-phty, Dynasty XVIII (1550-1295 B.C.); relief figure of a seated Harpocrates, Ptolemaic (305-30 B.C.); a lyre player standing by a column supporting a statue; profile head of a female, both Hellenistic; bronze ring, cut with falcon-headed equestrian figure, Romano-Egyptian; two inscribed Greek bezels; and four other rings and bezel, all late 1st millennium B.C.
