A COPTIC POTTERY PHIALE MESOMPHALOS OR OFFERING TRAY
CIRCA 2ND-4TH CENTURY A.D.
With central circular depression, surrounded by four smaller depressions interspersed with black painted outlines of altars with flaring corners, with rounded rim, 11 5/8 in. (29.5 cm.) diam.; a pottery composite vessel or multiple lamp in the form of a horse, a central spout on its back and five small pannier vessels, with black painted linear decoration and encircled stars, 5¼ in. (13.4 cm.) high; a fragmentary wooden relief icon of St George and the dragon type, the horseman with long spear, carved in relief with stippled background, 6 1/8 in. (15.5 cm.) high; and a sheet bronze disc with figure leading a horse, a row of bosses around the rim, mounted, 5½ in. (14 cm.) diam., all circa 4th-6th Century A.D. (4)
