A PAIR OF COPTIC WOOL AND LINEN CLAVI FRAGMENTS
5TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.
Each band in purple on an undyed background, comprising a frieze of animals including lions, hares, deer, hounds and a bull, between acanthus tendrils, a reserved peacock at one end, the other band with a female bust, 28 in. (71 cm.) and 25 1/8 in. (64 cm.) long respectively; and a fragmentary linen panel with applied twin multicoloured clavi and three roundels, the clavi with pendant finials, decorated with stylized figures wearing haloes between geometric and foliate motifs, clavi 8th-9th Century A.D., 49¼ in. (125 cm. long) (3)
