A ROMAN SARD INTAGLIO OF HERMES
CIRCA 1ST CENTURY A.D.
Cut with draped bust of Hermes wearing a diadem, kerykeion behind shoulder, set in an ancient bronze ring bezel, encased in later ring setting, 1.5 x 1.1 cm., 2.1 cm. across inner hoop; a sardonyx intaglio with a male bust shown in profile, wearing wreath in his hair and drapery around the neck, 1.6 x 1.2 cm., 2.3 cm. across inner hoop; and a cornelian intaglio engraved with a male portrait with long beard, wearing laurel wreath tied at the back, 1.6 x 1.1 cm., 1.8 cm. across inner hoop, both in later ring settings (3)
