Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the present drawing may date from circa 1804. A drawing of Fountains Abbey (Norwich Castle Museum) is stylistically similar and is signed and dated 1804. Cotman is known to have passed through Lincoln in 1804 and there is another unfinished watercolour of Lincoln in the collection of the Norwich Castle Museum.
