Lot Essay

The present drawing is consistent with Landseer's many witty pen and ink caricatures, which were often executed as his contribution to a house party and left with the host. The obscured inscription may well refer to Sir Francis Grant (1803-1878) whose pen and ink drawings are stylistically similar to those of Sir Edwin Landseer.
