Struck by its picturesque and romantic quality, Tintern Abbey in Southeast Wales drew numerous artists to sketch and paint under its mossy ruins. Colman's rendition of the crossing the North transept is taken from a spot also adopted by Turner in 1794 and depicted in a series watercolors now housed in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
