According to Virginie Dumont-Breton, this painting brought back memories of her youth and the time she spent with her father, Jules Breton during his stay in Douarnenez, Brittany: "Going up the stream of this small river, I used to see the washing area where women wearing white hats, in which the greenery was reflected, kneeling on the shiny and used stone, were chatting, in the shade, in Breton while doing the laundry" (V. Demont-Breton, "Les Maisons que j'ai connues", Nos amis artistes, vol. 2, Paris, 1927, p. 46).

Bourrut-Lacouture points out the existence of a drawing similar in composition to the present work that is part of a book of drawings Breton worked on in September of 1865 (Private Collection, Jules Breton Archives).

Annette Bourrut-Lacouture will include this work in her forthcoming Breton catalogue raisonné.
