Lot Essay

The composition derives from the figures of the Virgin and Child in Rogier's Saint Luke drawing the Virgin in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. That composition had an enormous impact, especially in the second half of the fifteenth century, and was taken up in numerous half-length images of the Virgin and Child. The present type relates to the later reworking by Rogier employed in the left wing of the Diptych of Jean Gos (Tournai, Musée des Beaux-Arts), as well as to that probably created in the Bruges workshop of the Master of the Legend of Saint Ursula (for example the painting by that master in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels).
