Lot Essay

A possible attribution to Abraham van den Hecken has been proposed by Willem van de Watering and Fred Meijer of the RKD. As noted by Mr. Meijer (private correspondence, 22 December 1997), characteristic of the little-known oeuvre of Van den Hecken are the artist's attention to fabrics, the thick-set figures with slightly sharp features, the rendition and positioning of the hands, and the placement of one or more figures looking directly out of the picture, past the viewer.
