Lot Essay

Born in The Hague in 1643, Rochus van der Does studied law in Leiden but made his career as a Raadsheer (Senator) and Schepen (Alderman) of the city of Utrecht, were he died in 1707. His parents were Willem and Wilhelmina, née Van den Honert. The pendant, a Portrait of Alexandrina Justusdr. Kriex, who married the present sitter in Haarlem in 1674, was sold as lot 75 at Lepke, Berlin, in 1892 (see provenance, above).
