Lot Essay

We are very grateful to Annalisa Scarpa Sonino for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.

The inscription on the statue refers to Marius' victory over the Cimbri at Vercellae in 101 B.C (the same words were used on the coins struck during his seventh Consulship); the same statue recurs in various of Marco's works, including the capricci of ruins in the collections at Raby Castle, Castle Howard and the Isaac Delgado Museum of Art, New Orleans
