THE LEGENDARY ROMANEE-CONTI 1959 IN MAGNUM FORMAT

The most celebrated Grand Cru in Burgundy, this tiny appelation (an almost perfect square 150 yards by 150) lies in the middle of the slope, being perfectly situated by other famous vineyards such as Richebourg, and Romanée St. Vivant. Disregarding its perfect location it is ultimately the very able hands of the Domaine that crafts this highly sought after wine.

The 1959 vintage is considered as a textbook vintage from start to finish. From the blossoming in June, through long hot dry July and August, which was followed by some rain to give the grapes perfect ripeness for an early harvest which started September 14th. The production of Romanée-Conti was 9607 bottles.

These two magnums are the last remains of an estate. The wines were bought upon release and stored in a cold natural limestone cellar here in the Northeast.

"Fairly deep, richly coloured; sweet, harmonious nose, rich fruit, almost jammy - strawberry, rasberry - great depth, faultless; lovely flavour, still with excellent tannin and acidity, typical Romanée-Conti persistence in flavour. One of my highest marks of the entire range. March 2002 ***** Perfect now, yet years of life left."
