No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VA… Read more Lots 74 - 76 are rare preliminary studies for plates published in David Hockney's 'A rake's progress', a series of sixteen etchings inspired by Hockney's first visit to New York in 1961. Hockney refined these studies in the published versions, omitting some of the details seen in these etchings. For example, in 'The Arrival' (lot 74) the artist explicitly identifies himself as the rake, with a suitcase monogrammed 'DH', a detail which is deleted from the larger published version. David Hockney's Studio has suggested that no more than two impressions were printed from each plate, making these extremely rare early examples of Hockney's graphic art.

The artist's studio has confirmed that the pencil sketch in the upper margin is a study for the 'Young Contemporaries Exhibition' of 1962.
The plate is a preliminary sketch for 'The Arrival', from A rake's progress (S.A.C. 17)
